County Road 439

HOOK & EYE LANE - uncertain origin date - Lies one mile westerly of Amity, paralleling the railroad for most of it’s length. Named by Virgil Broadwater & Eddie Yoder in 1948, for local Amish families who lived in the area for many years. Virgil & Eddie were Amity grade school students at the time, walking to their respective homes west of town after a game, and their route took them along this unnamed road. They decided the road needed a name, and after a brief discussion they agreed on Hook & Eye Lane, based on the families of German descent residing along the westerly side of this road. They went home, cut and hand-painted up a couple of boards, and nailed them to telephone poles near the ends of the road. (ed- see letter from VB rec’d 12/2/2010 in road naming file)
