Roadside Vegetation Management

The Vegetation Management Program maintains roadside vegetation to ensure road safety, visibility, and infrastructure protection. This includes mowing, brush cutting, and targeted herbicide applications to provide clear lines of sight, control invasive species, and reduce fire hazards. Maintenance is conducted throughout the year to balance safety with environmental considerations.

Noxious Weed Control

We work to identify and control invasive weeds that threaten local ecosystems and agriculture. Our program prioritizes species designated as noxious by state and county regulations. We use an integrated approach, including mechanical/manual, biological control, cultural control, and herbicide applications. Residents can report infestations on roadsides

Habitat Restoration & Conservation

Our department supports efforts to restore native habitats, particularly for species like Kincaid’s lupine and the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly. We collaborate with landowners, conservation groups, and agencies to enhance habitat connectivity and implement best practices for long-term ecosystem health.

Stormwater & Erosion Control

Proper vegetation management plays a critical role in reducing erosion and improving water quality. We implement vegetative buffers, stabilize roadside ditches, and use native plantings to minimize sediment runoff into waterways. We also assess the effectiveness of these strategies in protecting aquatic habitats.

Public Outreach & Compliance

We engage with the community through education and outreach programs, ensuring compliance with vegetation management policies. Our team provides resources on responsible land stewardship, roadside maintenance best practices, and permitting requirements. We also coordinate with local agencies to align vegetation management efforts with environmental and public safety goals.

Roadside Vegetation Maintenance

The goal of the Vegetation Management Program is to maintain roadside vegetation to enhance public safety, preserve infrastructure, and support environmental stewardship. Our efforts ensure that roadways remain clear of hazardous vegetation, improve visibility for drivers, and prevent damage to road surfaces, signs, guardrails, and drainage systems.

Key maintenance activities include:

  • Mowing: Regular mowing keeps vegetation at safe levels, reduces fire risk, and prevents invasive plant encroachment. Mowing schedules are designed to align with seasonal growth patterns and minimize impacts on native plant species and pollinators.
  • Brush Cutting & Tree Trimming: Overgrown trees and brush can obstruct sightlines, encroach on travel lanes, and pose risks during storms. Our crew conducts mechanical brush cutting and selective tree trimming to maintain safe clearance zones along roads.
  • Herbicide Applications: Targeted herbicide treatments help manage noxious weeds and invasive plants that threaten native ecosystems and roadside stability. We follow best management practices to minimize environmental impact and comply with state and federal regulations.
  • Erosion, Drainage, & Culvert Maintenance: Proper roadside drainage is essential for preventing flooding, road damage, and erosion. We maintain ditches, vegetative buffers, and culverts to ensure water flows efficiently and sediment buildup is minimized. Regular inspections and cleanouts help prevent blockages that could lead to washouts or infrastructure failures.
  • Wildfire Risk Reduction: Managing roadside vegetation helps reduce fire hazards by minimizing fuel loads along roadways. Regular mowing and brush removal lower the risk of fire ignition and spread, particularly in dry seasons.

Maintenance is conducted on a rotating schedule, with priority given to high-traffic roads, safety concerns, and areas prone to invasive species. Our program strives to balance safety, infrastructure protection, and environmental sustainability in all roadside vegetation management practices.
