Current Projects - 2009Gooseneck Creek Habitat Restoration This project site had no good fish habitat, and the streambanks were badly eroded. Our contractor, Bateman Forest Management, is installing large woody debris structures and rootwads to create a pool-riffle habitat for fish and to decrease erosion. Deer Creek Prairie Restoration This project site is at Deer Creek County Park north of Sheridan. We began in the Spring of 2006 with a Technical Assistance Grant from OWEB to develop and design a plan for restoring and managing valuable uplands and wet prairie habitat in the park. In 2007, we received an OWEB Restoration Grant to implement the restoration phase of the project. During the summer of 2007, the site was mowed to control the invasive vegetaion. During the fall of 2007, the site was sprayed with a water-safe herbicide to kill the unwanted vegetation. In September, 2008, a contractor mowed and disked about 12 acres of the prairie. They also graded about 5 1/2 acres of the site to hold and spread water out over the property. Many native plants were in bloom in May, but we still had invasive plants present. In June 2009, a contractor again sprayed a water-safe herbicide to kill the unwanted vegetation. In the fall, we will re-seed the area with native plant seed, some of which was previously collected from the site from some of the remaining native species. We are working with the Institue for Applied Ecology in Corvallis to reintroduce Nelson's Checkmallow to the site. We will also plant other native wet prairie plants, and continue to remove invasive plants as we find them. Carlton Riparian Restoration - completed January 2008 This project site is in Wennerberg Park in Carlton. It was started in 2006, and it's looking great! Volunteers watered the trees and shrubs all last summer, and they are growing well. We have continued to work in the park this year to remove invasive plants and to re-plant some native species that were damaged in the flooding of December 2007. In October 2008, 66 students and 6 teachers from Yamhill-Carlton High School worked to remove invasive plants during a Volunteer Work Day. They worked very hard and filled 6 dump truck loads of blackberries and other weeds. WOW! THANKS YAMHILL-CARLTON HIGH SCHOOL! The Yamhill Basin Council used an OWEB Small Grant to implement this project. Project partners included: The City of Carlton, Carlton Together Cares, BLM-Tillamook Native Plant Partnership, and Yamhill County Corrections. Project Phases:
